the other night, after we left bailey's bar and grill where the lsu folks watch the game (geaux tigers!), we came back to our apartment not yet wanting to go to bed. we decided to watch the 2nd disc of that 70's show, season one. we have reactivated our blockbuster account for the sole reason of checking out new tv shows that have come to dvd already. well, truth be told i wanted to activate it so i could rent the old seasons of 90210. that was my favorite show growing up and now i have jumped on the new modern spin to 90210. it has made me nostalgic for the old one. apparently it has made everyone else is the area nostalgic as well because there is a very long wait for the first season. so instead they sent us that 70's show which was second on our q. anyway, i digress. we were still hungry with a huge craving for popcorn. we had bought mini bags of kettle corn (my pick) and movie theatre butter (marsh's pick) so we popped one bag of each and combined in a bowl. after scarfing up all the popcorn like pigs we were left with several kerrnels that didn't have the chance to be popped. i hate that fact about popcorn, you can never figure out how long exactly to leave it in the microwave, i don't care if the bag says listen for 1 second between the pop, what does that actually mean?
anyways, marsh had the brillant idea to try to pop the remaining kernels. he put them in a bowl (microwave safe) and covered them with our microwave lid we bought when we bought the actual microwave. we stood by and watched the magic begin. the remaining little guys popped themself over the bowl and continued to pop even after we opened the door to the microwave. i braved the first bite but surprisingly it was quite bland. marsh made the wrong move. he decided to grab the bowl out of the microwave only to realize too late the bowl was wildly hot so what happens next? the bowl shattered to the floor spraying popcorn and broken pieces everywhere. marsh claimed to have had first degree burn after the touch while my foot was bleeding from a tiny scrap caused by a blow from a piece of the bowl. despite the battle wounds and the mess, we both cracked up laughing!
the conclusion we came up with from this experiment was:
yes, the popcorn kernels will pop even outside of the bag but they are tasteless because (as marsh pointed out) the flavor is on the side of the popcorn bag. the biggest conclusion: never touch a super hot bowl!
