"first" friday around the world

every friday marsh gets off at 11:30. since i am currently employed as a bum, this works out especially well for me. this past friday i decided to name it "new friday" and the game was to do everything new. marsh kept calling it "first" friday so that name stuck. i had located a really cool area of town from the internet so first thing was first we went to find edgehill village. we finally located it and discovered some cute shops plus restaurants and hidden lofts. we opted not to park and walk around because there didn't seem to be much sense to the matter. since i chose that i made marsh pick the next thing to do. he drove us straight to centennial park where the parthenon resides. yep, you heard me right, the parthenon. you know that ancient structure found in greece? nashville has its very own version right here except for the fact that it is not left in ruins, as you obviously can tell.
disregard the quality of the picture, we left our cameras so all of today's pictures are supplied by my lovely blackberry.
we walked around the park for awhile and then toured the outside of the parthenon. it really is quite massive when up close. inside houses a museum and marsh wanted to go, so in we went. we explored some art exhibits, including one gallery full of photgraphs from katrina. pretty ironic that we continue to find pieces of louisiana everywhere we go. then we went upstairs to find none other than a 42 foot tall statue of athena parthenos (and yes that is where the name parthenon comes from). athena was massively huge and molded with amazing ability as well as creativity.
i couldn't even fit her into a picture. the complete bottom is missing of her. and as you can see, she almost touches the ceiling. you really can't help but stand in awe of this artistic piece of work. it took something like 8 years to finish the statue (the facts are slowly slipping my mind). i did happen to fall in love with greek history. its so fascinating while at the same time completely far out. little pieces of my study abroad kept coming back to me as we continue to explore the museum. one of my favorite parts of the statue was down at the bottom of athena stood a beautifully carved snake.
anyways, after leaving the museum i decided that the theme for the day was going to be "first" friday around the world. first because we were only allowed to do things we have never done before in nashville and around the world since we felt like we had just glimpsed a peak at greece.

stay tuned for the rest of the story.........
